RECONDITIONING/RESHARPENING BROACH MAINTENANCE PROGRAM

Broach Reconditioning Process:

The reworking process generally consists of either Resharpening or reconditioning the worn tool. Resharpening the gullet faces returns the tool to a workable condition and is frequently the only requirement. Reconditioning consists of retapering the tool and backing-off the tooth lands to restore the uniform taper and clearance after multiple sharpenings.

The typical method of sharpening broaches consists of using an aluminum oxide grinding wheel on a hand-wheel operated manual sharpening machine. This process is dependent upon the skill and feel of the operator which may cause a variance in the amount of metal removed. If one tooth is sharpened to a greater extent than the others, the result is an increased stress on the tooth and less then optimal tool life.

As a direct result of the manual sharpening , a progressive, uncontrolled alteration in the original broach geometry is created and may result in a drop in the performance efficiency of the broach.
